¡Feliz Aniversario Jessica & Michael!

These past few weeks I have been thinking about Jess & Michael’s wedding as their first anniversary approached and I realized I hadn’t seen the photos from their Photographer, Jason Huang of Table4Weddings.  I reached out just in time and got an immediate reply from Michael which turned into a back-and-forth with him & Jess reminiscing about their beautiful wedding.  It felt like talking to old friends, ones that I didn’t realize I missed until we re-connected.  From the first meeting when they came to Sayulita to scout, these two won me over.  I didn’t really want another wedding last fall with the lineup I had already booked, but I couldn’t say no to them and I’m glad I didn’t.   For a Doctor and an International Tax Law Attorney, they were one of the most fun and down-to-earth couples I’ve worked with.  Their group really knew how to party – though it would be hard not to have fun around them, particularly with Michael’s infectious, slightly mischievous, always giddy-with-love-for-his-Bride vibe.

The week before the wedding the forecast showed a strong prediction of rain and we made the call to tent both the ceremony and reception, which turned out to be a wise move, as the rain did come.  Though it’s never ideal to have to change the plan the week before your wedding, these two rolled with it and were super chill, trusting in the vision and knowing that the most important thing – their LOVE – would be the star of the day.  For me it was a new challenge to do a full tent setup and also fun to have the intimacy of a canopy over the reception when most every other wedding I plan is open air.

Seeing these photos for the first time just a few days ago after almost a year has been a real treat, remembering the special touches and moments of the day – Jess walking down the long stretch of beach while Michael’s eyes welled with tears of love and joy; Jess surprising Michael with the tequila burro after the ceremony; the tequila tasting bar stocked by Michael’s Uncle from Guadalajara with some seriously top shelf tequilas; the wild dance party with the Groom rocking my own band t-shirt by the end of the night; and most importantly, the sheer LOVE that is shared between these humans, that is visible in every photo of them.  Serious kudos to Jason of Table4Weddings – you are an amazing Photographer and it was a joy to see your work and relive the beautiful day.

I hope you all enjoy these photos as much as I did! (credits below)

From the Bride: “Andrea!! When our friend sent us an informal wedding video as a gift months later, the closing scene is of Mike and I taking a moment alone together after the ceremony.  In the back ground, you are running across the screen and making everything perfect while we are in bliss. Mike and I both laughed at that scene because it totally depicts what you did for us last year. Thank you thank you thank you! “

Katie + Evan’s Festive February Fiesta de Matrimonio!

Super excited to share these beautiful images from Joann Arruda Photography!  After 8 years working parallel paths in Sayulita’s wedding world but never criss-crossing, Joann & I finally got to work together not one but two times this season.  Stay tuned for more beautiful images from Joann of Blair & Jason’s April wedding – coming soon!  Without further ado, check out this sweet love fest fiesta!

Katie + Evan Wedding Feb 2014 - 36
Katie & Evan kicked off our 2014 wedding year in style, with a color-packed celebration at Sayulita’s Brisa Mar Palapa.  They also happen to be 1 of 4 couples we’re working with this year who have either known each other or been sweethearts since their high school years. Too adorable, right?

Katie & Evan’s Fiesta was full of festive D-I-Y details from Katie, her mom Chris, and her Aunts.  They hand-crafted all of the table centerpieces from homemade paper flowers displayed in cute tin cans with custom labels that Chris designed.   Mom also created all the escort cards and table numbers, and was on-site bright and early with her crew, helping to make sure everything was set up just so.

Katie & Evan requested a tequila tasting bar, so we ordered custom barrels bearing their names and wedding date to hold Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo varieties of delicious Marengo Tequila – shipped in direct from Arenal (just outside of Tequila, Jalisco) – for guests to sample at the reception.  After the party, they emptied out the barrels at the next morning’s brunch and packed them home as unique momentos from the big day.

Katie & Evan had a big guest list – 100+ – and wanted to ensure everyone had a place to stash their stuff during dinner & dancing so we created “cubbies” for the guests out of re-furbished market boxes – you can see in the photo these were definitely utilized to their fullest.  Mireya of Flor Mimo provided Katie’s lovely bouquet, Kori Walker of Kolor by Kori styled the Bride’s timeless and classically beautiful look, DJ Paladub had everyone shakin’ it on the dance floor, Don Pedro’s exceptional Catering & Bar team kept everyone happily quenched and fed, and of course Joann Arruda captured everything flawlessly.  I especially love the adorable shots of the couple around Sayulita – so much color and fun!

¡Feliz Aniversario Kate + Matt!

Kate Matt_086

I’m stoked to kick off another round of anniversary posts with the lovely Kate and Matt of Toronto, who are celebrating their 1 year anniversary today!  Kate + Matt are two beautiful people, madly in love.  When Kate wrote me, she described Matt as her dream guy – a gorgeous tattooed rock star.  They wanted a fun, rock ‘n’ roll wedding that would be a kick-ass party for their best friends, most of whom were musicians or singers.  We set up a stage and hired Sayulita’s awesome Los Tikkilyches to be the host band for this music-oriented reception.  The first dance song was performed by close family, the Groom’s band played a set, and the Groom sang and played a song that he wrote for his Bride – a very special and tearful moment for all.  Los Tikkilyches kept the crowd rockin’ and dancing into the night.

The awesome Jillian Mitchell was the magic behind the lens.  Gloria of Concepto Floral designed the flowers, and the girls got beautified in the skillful hands of Kori Walker (Kolor by Kori) and Karina Perez (Raphaella Salon)

¡Feliz Aniversario Krissy + Mike!

I have a visual feast (another Evrim Icoz stunner) of an anniversary post for you today, as Krissy & Mike of Colorado celebrate 2 years of wedded bliss.  Another couple very dear to my (our) heart(s), they were so amazing to work with and had such a fun, truly heartfelt and original wedding full of love, family, friends, and a million little details that brought it all together in one stunning package, as beautifully documented by the ever-talented Evrim Icoz Photography.  Memorable moments from the week included a bluegrass jam session by Mike “Banjo” Fritz and his pals around the bonfire at the La Terrazola welcome party, and the highly anticipated arrival to town of the couples’ friend Harry, who actually rode his bicycle all the way from Colorado to Sayulita.  By himself.  To raise money for cancer.  Awesome.

Krissy & Mike’s Brisa Mar Palapa wedding was bursting with brilliant Mexican color, from the hand-sewn day-of-the-dead patterned napkins that each guest received as a favor, to maracas, to tequila bottles naming each table, to our favorite kids’ play area ever, to the photo wall, and on and on and on.  Their Moms chipped in on the DIY front, with Mike’s artist mom painting 2 large canvases that they rolled up and shipped to Mexico where we had them re-stretched for hanging in the Palapa entryway.  Krissy’s mom hand-sewed pillows echo-ing the theme of the paintings, “All You Need Is Love.”  Krissy sourced Etsy for tons of adorable details like a mini “All You Need Is Love” banner to drape across the front of the cake table, and the cute wooden cake topper complete with the couples’ beloved pup.

I’ll let the plethora of gorgeous images (sorry, it was hard to narrow it down – too much beauty to share!) speak for themselves, and you can also check out Evrim’s original blog post here.  All photos ©Evrim Icoz Photography, 2010.  Flowers by Gloria Rodriguez of Concepto Floral; Cakes by Naef Cuisine; Bridal Styling by Funky Diva Hair Design; Catering, Bar & Venue by Don Pedro’s.

Dia + Patrick’s D-I-Y-filled Love Fest

We first met Dia & Patrick back in November 2008, when they flew in from the Bay Area to photograph Julie & Andrew’s wedding at the Brisa Mar Palapa. I liked them immediately – what can I say, I have a thing for couples that work together – and when I saw the gorgeous photos of the wedding, I added them to my photographer list in hopes we’d get to work together again. Two years later they were back in Sayulita to photograph Monique & Steve’s Villa del Oso wedding, and were also in the early stages of planning for their own Sayulita nuptials – which they hired us to plan the next fall.

They picked the cosmic and auspicious wedding date of 11.11.11, the lovely location of Flor de la Playa on the north end beach, and let the details flow into place from there. And did they ever flow! Dia was a D-I-Y powerhouse, even down to hand-crafting her and her Bridesmaids’ bouquets and Patrick’s adorable boutonniere. The wedding was filled with tons of fun and meaningful details, like the lighting of a wish lantern during the ceremony, a jenga “guest book” for well wishes and advice, a photo booth, a foot bath for de-sanding after the ceremony on the beach, and Mexican wedding cookies and fireside s’mores for dessert.

The welcome cocktails were held on the rooftop level of Calypso on the plaza, where guests sipped margaritas and downed plates of tacos al pastor while “Endless Summer” projected on the outside wall. Photos of Dia & Patrick were strung across the wall for guests to peruse as the entered the party.

The wedding and festivities were beautifully captured by Ed Fladung of Elizabeth Lloyd Photography.

yes, the Bride actually made that bouquet.

Over the past few years we have been lucky enough to get to know Dia & Patrick and are honored to now call them our friends. Today I just got confirmation they will be shooting Amanda & Dave’s Villa del Oso wedding with us in November, and are planning to spend next winter shooting and filming weddings in the Sayulita area – so exciting! Be sure to check out their new listing on Sayulita Life.

Congratulations on a beautiful wedding, Dia & Patrick!

¡Feliz Aniversario Adriana + John!

This anniversary post is going to be a good one! We’ve been anxiously waiting to share this lovely fête full of gorgeous, color-saturated, super fun Mexican details featuring some of our favorite clients and more importantly, wonderful friends, John & Adriana. Adriana is surely our most avid facebook follower and fan and has expressed her high hopes for their anniversary post so I can only hope to measure up! In fact, in anticipation of this big event, she even sent me some after-hours photos of the wedding-reception-turned-pool-party-mayhem, featuring probably the Best. Hora-dance. Of all time. [evidence below]

John & Adriana, already friends – and really, honorary extended family – of ours, came to us with a vision for their wedding. They wanted to share with their friends and family all of the things that they loved most about Sayulita. And what they love about Sayulita isn’t fancy restaurants or big stately villas – it’s great food eaten on the street, vivid colors, festive music, surfing, the beach, candy, spicy banana chips, the “nieve, nieve!” guy, and a million other little details that on their own may not mean much, but together form the eclectic crazy awesome patchwork whole that is our very own, one-of-a-kind, strange little Sayulita.

Aside from showcasing what they love about Sayulita, this had to be a kick-ass, original, super fun PARTY, one that would live up to their own track record of throwing multiple kick-ass, original, super fun major events all year long through their junker-car racing company 24 Hours of LeMons, [yes, this link really is worth clicking on – watch the video, these guys are awesome] of which John is the founder. So after setting some pretty high expectations and laying down their awesome vision, they pretty much turned the reins over to us and let us go at it without much micro-managing on their parts, which made it one of the more fun weddings we’ve worked on because we got to let our creativity flow and really have fun with it.

The result was truly one of our “Best. Weddings. Ever.” And it is still lauded as such by J+A’s pals. For me it was the best because I had the freedom to run with their vision while incorporating lots of little touches and details along the way so that as their day unfolded, they got to experience many of the little surprises in the same fun way the guests did, which is a rarity in the world of hyper-planned weddings these days. Plus I felt like I knew them well enough as my friends to “get” what they wanted, but also in the process, I really “got” them more through the planning of their wedding and felt closer to them than ever.

The lovely day was perfectly captured by Photographer Donna Day, and I can’t imagine a more fitting and perfect match between wedding and photographer than this saturated color-fest and Donna’s trademark color-saturated photo-style.

Okay, enough yapping – now for some pretty pictures!

p.s. As promised, after party photos from the Bride, and with a parting “day after” beach shot:

¡Feliz Aniversario Katy + Casey!

A very Happy 3-year Anniversary to Katy + Casey of Chicago and now Kansas City!  This lovely walk down memory lane brings you more beautiful images from Elizabeth Lloyd Photography.  Katy + Casey had a fun-filled family affair wedding week with a welcome party at La Terrazola on the beach and an intimate rehearsal dinner at Calypso.  Katy and her sisters chipped in on a lot of the decor details, creating a classic pretty-preppy look for the wedding and reception at the Brisa Mar Palapa, with a navy & magenta palette.  Mariachis and flamenco guitar set the musical tone for the ceremony and cocktail hour, with a DJ packing the dance floor after (and even a few times during) dinner.

Happy Anniversary Katy + Casey (+ little George)!
